2022 Enrollment Guide of Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences for International Students
Being a non-profit-making institution engaging in geoscience research of the largest scale in China, the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS) offers a variety of geological disciplines and has strong technical force. The postgraduate cultivation of CAGS mainly relies on the 43 affiliated organizations of China Geological Survey. At present, there is a team of 560 experienced supervisors, including 169 doctoral supervisors. CAGS boasts first-class geological equipments and scientific instruments, well-equipped field scientific research bases and experimental platforms, and steady project fundings. Meanwhile, CAGS provides good on-campus accommodation and board. Your application to CAGS is always welcome!
I. Application Prerequisites
i. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizen with a valid passport, healthy both physically and mentally, and abiding by the laws and decrees of China .
ii. Applicants for a Master degree should be under the age of 35, and applicants for a doctor’s degree should be under the age of 40.
iii. Enrollment to the master program requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent, and to the doctor program program requires a master’s degree or equivalent.
iv. Applying for Chinese - taught courses requires HSK Level 4 or above; applying for English-taught courses must meet one of the following conditions:
(1) native English speaker;
(2) English as the official language;
(3) IELTS 6.0 or above, or TOEFL 80 or above.
v. Applicants with foreign embassies and consulates in China, applicants with representative offices of international organizations in China, and applicants who are the accompanying family members of the above, please refer to the relevant regulation of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
II. Application Materials
i. Application Form for CAGS’ Prospective International Students (Attachment 1)
ii. Applicants for master program should submit graduate certificates and academic transcripts. Applicants for doctor program should submit graduate and postgraduate certificates and official transcripts. Applicants expecting to graduate should provide the official letter from the current universities stating the anticipated graduate date, and submit certificates before registration. (Please provide the above materials with original documents or notarized copies either in Chinese or English)
iii. Language proficiency certificates: scanned copies of HSK Level 4 Certificate, or IELTS score, or TOEFL score
iv. Scanned copy of your passport valid for at least a year.
v. Electronic photo:
(1)A two-inch bareheaded recent photo, which should be the same as the one on the personal information page of the passport
(2)Pixel size not lower than 320*240, depth-width ratio as 4:3
(3)The photo size should be within100-500KB
(4)Only JPG format is accepted
vi. Personal statement : briefly introducing your research work, academic achievements, research plan and career goals, within 800-2000 words.
vii. Two recommendation letters from your thesis instructor and a professor or an associate professor related to your major (including their contacts, signatures and dates)
viii. Foreign Physical Examination Form
ix. Economic security certificate: Applicants who come to study in China at their own expenses, please provide letter of financial guarantee issued by the guarantor and the original copy of the certificate of bank saving.
x. Provisional Acceptance Form of International Student by CAGS Supervisor (Attachment-2)
To know supervisors’ accepting intentions, the Graduate School of CAGS and the institute which accepts international students request the applicants to submit the Provisional Acceptance Form of International Student by CAGS Supervisor as a supplementary application material. Applicants should submit the Form together with other application materials. The Graduate School of CAGS encourages applicants to get in touch with supervisors whose research fields they are interested in by themselves and then try to gain supervisors’ acceptance. Applicants can send the Form to supervisors and indicate their research intentions via email. If not accepted by any supervisors, applicants should indicate interested supervisors in the Form.
xi. Other requested documents
Notes: Please name each of the above-mentioned application documents as “number-document name-applicant’s full name”. Application will not be reviewed if the application documents are incomplete. Application documents will not be returned to the applicant no matter whether his or her application is approved or not.

This specialty covers standardization study, organic analysis, inorganic analysis and experimental testing techniques.
iv. Solid geophysics
This specialty covers gravity, geomagnetism, electromagnetism, seismology, geodynamics, tectonophysics and applied geophysics.
v. Mineral Processing Engineering
This specialty covers the following aspects including comprehensive utilization technology of complicated and refractory strategic mineral resources, deep processing of non-metallic minerals, mineral processing, smelting and utilization in an environmental way, mineral material preparation and solid waste resource utilization, and comprehensive utilization of rare and precious metals, etc.
vi. Resources and Environment
This specialty covers the following aspects including geological engineering and geological disasters, ecological geology and ecological restoration, new energy exploration, resource exploration engineering, exploration geophysics, and mining engineering.
IV. Important Deadlines and Material Delivery
1. Deadline for Registration:

3. Time to Start the First Semester: September in 2022 (The exact date will be informed on the Letter of Admission)

5. The length of postgraduate study is generally 3 years and the length of doctoral students is generally 4 years. Upon the expiration of the study period, after the completion of training plan, those who have passed the examination and have successfully defended their dissertations shall be conferred the corresponding degree and graduation certificate.
V. Relative Fees
i. Registration Fee: 500 yuan per person. After the applicant passes the qualification examination, the fee will be paid in the way designated by the Graduate School of CAGS, and the fee will nor be refunded.
ii. Tuition
1. Master students: 28000 yuan per academic year
2. Doctoral students: 35000 yuan per academic year
iii. Accommodation Fee
1. Single Bed Room: 3100 yuan per person per month
2. Double Bed Room: 1550 yuan per person per month
3. Three Bed Room: 1033 yuan per person per month
The Graduate School of CAGS provides on-campus dormitories for international graduate students who can have access to the Internet, independent toilets, shower facilities with dormitories, also can make cold dish.
iv. Medical Insurance
International graduate students in China must purchase medical insurance at the price of 800 yuan per person per year.

VI. Materials Review and Admission
CAGS adopts the “application review system”, that is, the application materials are to be reviewed and the applicants are to be reexamined, for selecting and admitting international graduate students. The Graduate School will review the application materials and select the best candidates to participate in the entrance examination. The entrance examination is mainly based on interview, and the specific content, way, requirements and time schedule of the examination will be notified by the Graduate School to the applicants who have passed the materials review.
Based on the review of application materials and the results of the entrance examination, CAGS will select the best and finalize the admission list. Admission information will be released on the Graduate School website http://en.cags.ac.cn/. Please log onto the website frequently to inquire about relevant information. Admission Notice, along with “Visa Application for Study in China” (Form JW202) and other relevant materials will be mailed to students themselves by the Graduate School.
VII. Scholarships
i. If you participate in the scientific research activities of the supervisors’ project, you can apply for the research assistance allowance, which is 1500-4500 yuan per month for doctoral students and 1300-2500 yuan per month for master students;
ii. International graduate students who have made outstanding achievements in community activities, studying and scientific research can apply for other corresponding awards set up by the Graduate School.
