The 65th CCOP Steering Committee Meeting Opens in Xi’an

The 65th Steering Committee Meeting of the Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia (CCOP) was convened in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province of China on November 28-29, 2015, with the presence of over 50 representatives from the CCOP Member Countries and Technical Secretariat. It was sponsored by CCOP and organized by China Geological Survey (CGS), Ministry of Land and Resources of China (MLR). Prof. Wang Xiaolie, Vice President of CGS and Executive Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, addressed the Opening Ceremony. 

 

Prof. Wang Xiaolie pointed out in his speech that China’s economy entering the new normal had injected new impetus and brought about new opportunities for international exchanges and cooperation in geoscience innovation and geological investigation. Prof. Wang Xiaolie put forward the following three proposals for future cooperation:

 

First, the CCOP Member Countries shall establish a union of geological surveys in the East and Southeast Asia, give full play to the functions of CCOP, set up a regular meeting mechanism among leaders of geological surveys in the region and further diversify cooperation channels to promote geoscience research and geological survey in the East Asia and Southeast Asia.

 

Second, the CCOP Member Countries along the “One Belt, One Road Initiative” shall further intensity geoscience exchanges and cooperation in energy, mineral resources, underground water, geo-environment and geo-information.

 

Third, the CCOP Member Countries shall jointly initiate and participate in large-scale international geoscience plans and projects to jointly resolve complicated geoscience problems, strengthen geo-information sharing, jointly cultivate leading geoscience talents and try the best to make new breakthroughs in deep space, deep ocean and deep earth resources exploration so as to realize common development and prosperity.

 

During the meeting, the next five-year plan and the 50th anniversary of CCOP will be on the agenda.
