CAGS Celebrates the 47th Anniversary of Earth Day with a Primary School Visit Program

[ 05-10-2016 ]

To celebrate the 47th World Earth Day (April 22nd), Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS) invited students from Zhanlanlu Primary School to visit the Institute of Geomechanics, CAGS on April 19th, 2016. The theme of this visit is “Spiritual Inheritance of Prof. J. S. Lee”.

Visit started with a tour at Prof. J. S. Lee’s former residence and laboratories located in the eastern side of the Institute of Geomechanics, CAGS. Old pictures and things exhibited there demonstrate the lifetime of Prof. Lee, the founding father of Geomechanics. “J. S. Lee Memorial Hall”, which is in the western side of the Institute, demonstrates the great contributions that Prof. Lee made for establishing of Geomechanics, innovating geoscience theories and promoting geoscience education. Last stop of the visit was the “Key Laboratory on In-situ Stress Monitoring and Measurement, CAGS” where student visitors gained a primary understanding on the evolution and application of Prof. Lee’s theories on Geomechanics.

The cooperation on geoscience education between CAGS and Zhanlanlu Primary School started in 2012. Over the past 5 years, students from Zhanlanlu Primary School have visited Beijing Shrimp Center, Three-Dimension Geological Mapping Center, Museum for Continental Dynamics, SinoProbe Program Center, Key Laboratory of Metallogeny and Mineral Resources Assessment of Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) and Key Laboratory of Saline Lake Resources and Environment of MLR. The above visits provide students with access to high-tech instruments and equipments and have effectively stimulated their interest in Geosciences.
