Sino-Mongolian Geoscience Cooperation Seminar Successfully Held
To further enhance geoscience exchanges between China and Mongolia and promote cooperation in geophysics and deep Earth exploration, the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences and the Mongolian National Geological Survey hosted an online Sino-Mongolian Geoscience Cooperation Seminar on August 9, 2024. Wu Dengding, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee and Vice President of the Academy, and Ba Monghedri, Director of the Mongolian National Geological Survey, both attended the seminar and delivered speeches. The seminar was chaired by Dr. Dong Shuwen, Chief Scientist of the Laboratory of Deep Earth Sciences and Technology at the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China.
Researcher Chen Xuanhua, Deputy Chief Geologist of the Academy, reviewed the history of Sino-Mongolian cooperation and the research achievements in the field of deep Earth exploration. Dr. Wu Qingju, a researcher at the Institute of Geophysics, China Earthquake Administration, presented an academic report on the construction of a seismic observatory in Mongolia. During the discussion session, both sides explored potential collaboration on deep seismic reflection profiles along the Sino-Mongolian Corridor. They also outlined visions for cooperation in areas such as basic geological research, mineral exploration, urban geology, and geological disaster prevention.
The geoscience cooperation between China and Mongolia has been strong and fruitful. Since 2002, the two countries have collaborated on projects related to geological mapping, deep lithospheric structure, and processes in Asia, as well as the environmental and resource impacts of these processes. This long-standing partnership has led to numerous research achievements and fostered a deep friendship. The seminar established a new framework for communication and cooperation in Sino-Mongolian collaboration. This framework lays the foundation for further practical cooperation in the field of deep Earth science.
Approximately 20 experts participated in the seminar, including those from the Deep Earth Exploration Center, the International Cooperation Department of the Academy, the Lithosphere Research Center of the Institute of Geology, the Institute of Geophysics of the China Earthquake Administration, and the Mongolian National Geological Survey.
