The Institute of Geology Holds a Field Seminar on the Qilianshan Orogenic Belt
Recently, the Institute of Geology held a field seminar on the Qilianshan Orogenic Belt in Xining to deepen fundamental geological survey and research on the Qilianshan Orogenic Belt, providing a platform for sharing research results and interdisciplinary knowledge. Over 50 experts and graduates attended the seminar and they are from the Tianjin Center of China Geological Survey,Qinghai Geological Survey Institute,Gansu Geological Survey Institute,Northwest University,Hefei University of Technology, the Institute of Geology, CAGS,and the Institute of Geomechanics, CAGS.They traveled across northern, middle, and southern Qilian landmass in six days, covering over one thousand kilometers, and had an in-depth interdisciplinary discussion.
Researchers Zhang Jianxin and Yan Zhen described in detail the fundamental geological setting of the study area and the planned investigation routes, observation targets, important geological phenomena,
research results and scientific significance. They also systematically reported their latest research achievements respectively, including Early Paleozoic subduction-related
high pressure/low temperature metamorphic rock series(blueschist, eclogite),
ophiolite suite, melange, and related basins (island arc,fore-arc,back-arc)and
marine/continental sedimentary-volcanic formation.
Present at the seminar are experts and graduates in engaged in such research fields as metamorphic petrology, sedimentary geology, structural
geology, magmatic petrology, and regional geology. They put forward a new thought on
the study of orogenic belts, holding that research on the stratigraphic
age,structural environment andstratigraphy
of orogenic belts plays a crucial role, and reached a consensus that further research on fundamental geology such as stratigraphy is needed to clear up the bottleneck in mineral prospecting in the study area.
