Vice Rector of University of the Aegean visits the Institute of Geomechanics
On July 18, 2015, Prof. Nickolas Zouros, the Vice Rector of the University of the Aegean, visited the Institute of Geomechanics, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS).
Prof. Long Changxing, the Honorary Director of the Institute of Geomechanics, gave a general introduction of the Institute. Prof. Zhang Yueqiao, Chief of the Research Division on Neotectonics and Active Tectonics, delivered a report entitled “the Neotectonics and Active Tectonics in Mainland China“, which introduced the latest research development and future mapping plans of neotectonics, active tectonics and active faults in areas including Tibet, Yunnan Province, Qinling Mountains etc. Prof. Wu Zhonghai, Deputy Chief of the Research Division on Neotectonics and Active Tectonics, introduced “the Distribution Map of Active Faults in China” which was being compiled and the research progress of paleoearthquakes.
Prof. Hou Chuntang, the Deputy Director of the Institute, expressed the wish to explore bilateral cooperation in neotectonics and active tectonics, geoheritage and geoparks, and exchange of visiting scholars and graduate students.
Prof. Nickolas Zouros introduced that the Aegean Sea islands were located in the collision belt between the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate, where seismicity was of high frequency and active faults were well developed. He expressed the wish to further bilateral cooperation in geophysics, geological structure and fault, geoparks etc.
Prof. Nickolas Zouros later visited the Key Laboratory of Paleomagnetism and Paleostructure Reconstruction under the Ministry of Land and Resources of China (MLR), CAGS Key Laboratory of In-situ Stress Measurement and Monitoring, Mechanics Laboratory of Rocks at High Temperature and Pressure, and Applied Geophysics Experimental Site.
Ms. Chen Xiaoning, the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Geological Environment, Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR), Prof. Ma Yinsheng, the Deputy Director of the Institute, together with other relevant researchers from the Institute also attended the meeting.
