Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration

Institute of Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration (IGGE), under the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS), was founded in 1957. Possessing the professional scientific research team of exploring geophysics and geochemistry, our Institute is the “Research Center of National Contemporary Geological Exploration Engineering” and the unit which possesses the right to confer the Master’s Degree of Geochemistry through out the country. It is mainly occupied in the innovation and research, development and application of exploration geophysics and geochemistry techniques, and the national fundamental, public beneficial and strategical works of geologic survey. There are 375 staffs and workers in the Institute at present, including 1 academician of CAS, 61 senior engineers of professor-grade, and 66 senior engineers, 30 among  which  there  are  Doctors and 37  Masters.

The Main Scopes of Research:

Elastic wave field exploration: development from traditional seismic exploration to full spectrum seismic exploration, research and establishment of new theories and techniques for hard-rock metal seismic exploration, anti-interference engineering seismic exploration, and deep precise seismic exploration, and applications in buried mineral resources exploration, multiple geologic objectives, engineering, active fault detection in urban area and so on.
Electric (Electromagnetic) field precise and quick detection: research of new theory and techniques system of electromagnetic field (airborne electromagnetic method, ground active and passive electromagnetic method, high temperature superconducting magnetometer) precise and quick detection, three-dimension applications in geologic body inversion spatial imaging and positioning. applications to hidden ore, energy resources, groundwater resource and geothermal resource investigation and evaluation, etc.
Potential field detection: research of new techniques of potential field data observation and data processing, applications in aspects of fundamental geologic survey such as mineral resources, energy resources survey and evaluation, geologic structure environment, etc.
Subsurface geophysical exploration: establishment and integration of technique system of large perspective distance, high resolution and comprehensive subsurface geophysical exploration; research combined application of techniques mainly for electromagnetic wave and sound wave tomography, borehole magnetic measurement, borehole induced polarization measurement, borehole transient electromagnetic method; and applications to deep ore exploration, geologic hazard prevention and control, hydrology and engineering geology survey, etc.
Multielement information integration and visualization: development of geophysical exploration three-dimension inversion techniques, multi-parameter cooperative inversion techniques, new techniques of information three-dimension visualization techniques and results expression geophysical survey data under complex surface conditions and complex medium conditions; carrying out applications in gravity, electrical method, magnetic method, seismic, radioactivity and geologic information interfusion processing and comprehensive interpretation.
Theory and methods of deep penetrating geochemistry and geochemical block (massif): research of trap of low density, ultralow density deep penetrating geochemistry information, geochemistry features identification of great mine and large-scale mine lumped area, theory and methods of geochemical massif; applications in geochemical mapping, international geochemical mapping and global resources exploration, metallogenic prediction of great mine and large-scale mine lumped area in large area of coverage (particularly in desert and gobi in the West Region).
Mapping of ecological environment geochemistry and multiple objectives, multiple measures geochemistry: research and integration new theories, new methods and new techniques system for geochemistry survey and evaluation of multiple mediums and multiple objectives area of coverage, peculiar landscape types and special commodities in globe, regions and local measures; Applications in multiple objectives geochemical survey, agriculture and ecological environment geochemistry evaluation and harness, regional geochemical survey, important metallogenic region (zone) resource potential survey and evaluation, as well as in the aspect of digital Earth.
Applied fundamental geochemistry and analytic testing: Research and establishment of analytic testing and quality monitoring techniques system and standard substance system of whole element, various modalities, precise and high efficiency. Research and applications in geochemistry sample analysis, geochemistry environmental monitoring throughout the country, the upper earth crust element abundance and fiducial value of soil ecologic environment of China.
Theory and techniques of oil and gas geophysical and geochemical exploration: research of the geophysical exploration technique system of basin structure, conformation and container rock in the survey and evaluation of oil and gas resources; research of new theory and techniques system of geochemistry in   oil and gas migration, aggregation, storage as well as survey and evaluation of oil and gas resources. Application research and investigation work of oil and gas geophysical and geochemical exploration technologies covering complex areas, such as new developed areas, layer systems and maritime space.
